Songkran, the Thai New Year, turns streets into water fights in mid-April. Pattaya celebrates longer than most cities and ends with Wan Lai, when Beach Road closes for a day of water and music. Plan your transfer around the closures and keep your bags dry.

Songkran and Wan Lai explained

Officially, Songkran runs from 13 to 15 April. Families visit temples, pour scented water over Buddha images and the hands of elders, and then the streets turn into a friendly water fight. Along the east coast the festival lasts several days longer. Wan Lai is the local closing celebration: Naklua traditionally holds its Wan Lai a day before Pattaya, and Pattaya's own Wan Lai, usually around 19 April, is the biggest day of the season with stages, foam and crowds along the whole beach.

Closures on Wan Lai day

On Pattaya's Wan Lai, Beach Road is closed to traffic from the Dolphin Roundabout in the north to the far end near South Pattaya from midday until midnight. The sois between Beach Road and Second Road are blocked as emergency lanes, and trucks carrying water tanks are kept off the main roads. Diverted traffic squeezes onto Second and Third Road, and drives that normally take ten minutes can take an hour. If your hotel faces the beach, expect the driver to stop at a side entrance.

Songkran at a glance

  • Thai New Year with temple visits and water blessings
  • Water fights on Beach Road, Second Road and Soi Buakhao
  • Wan Lai: the final, biggest day in Pattaya
  • Silom and Khao San Road as Bangkok's water zones

Keeping yourself and your luggage dry

Water is thrown at anyone on the street, including people walking from a car to a lobby. Keep passports, phones and cash in a waterproof pouch, and pack electronics in the middle of your suitcase. Ask the driver to pull up as close to the door as possible and hand the bags straight to hotel staff. A set of dry clothes in your hand luggage helps if you arrive soaked anyway. Inside the vehicle, windows stay closed; open pickups with water barrels drive slowly and aim at open windows.

Flying in during Songkran

Around the holidays many Thais travel home, so airports and Motorway 7 are busy on the first days, and the return wave hits after the long weekend. Up to 90 minutes of waiting after landing are included, which helps with long queues. U-Tapao is a short hop from Pattaya; details are on the U-Tapao to Pattaya page.

Where it's quieter

Beach Road and Soi Buakhao are the centre of the action. If you want to choose when you get wet, Pratumnak Hill and the condominiums of Naklua and Wong Amat lie a little away from the main water zones. The pages for Pratumnak Hill and Naklua & Wong Amat describe both areas.

Songkran in Bangkok

The Bangkok Songkran Festival is concentrated on the official holidays. Silom Road becomes a pedestrian water zone, Khao San Road fills with backpackers, and the old town around Sanam Luang hosts more traditional ceremonies. Many locals leave the city, so the drive in from Suvarnabhumi is often faster than usual, but roads near Silom and Khao San are closed to cars in the afternoon and evening. If you stay in that area, see Suvarnabhumi to Silom & Sathorn; other districts are on Suvarnabhumi to Bangkok.

Frequently asked questions

When is Wan Lai in Pattaya?+

Usually around 19 April, with Naklua celebrating a day earlier. The city confirms the dates and closures each year shortly before the festival.

Will my transfer get wet?+

Windows stay closed during the ride, but the walk from car to lobby can be wet. Keep documents and electronics in waterproof bags.

Can the driver reach my Beach Road hotel on Wan Lai?+

Not while Beach Road is closed. The driver will use a side street or rear entrance, so note any alternative entrance in your booking.

Is Bangkok also closed during Songkran?+

Only the main water zones such as Silom and Khao San Road. Elsewhere traffic is often lighter than usual because many residents travel home.

Which day is easiest for arriving in Pattaya?+

Avoid the afternoon of Wan Lai day. Arriving a day earlier or in the morning keeps the drive short.
