The Pattaya International Fireworks Festival fills Pattaya Beach for two evenings, usually at the end of November. Beach Road closes to traffic during the shows, so it pays to plan your arrival and drop-off point before you land.

What happens on the beach

For two evenings, pyrotechnic teams from several countries take turns launching displays over the bay, often set to music. The programme on the sand starts in the early evening, while the main fireworks begin after sunset. Large crowds line the beach between North and South Pattaya, and the hotel rooms with sea view along Beach Road are usually booked well ahead.

Road closures and what they mean for your ride

On the festival evenings, Beach Road is closed to normal traffic from North Pattaya to South Pattaya, and the short sois between Beach Road and Second Road are busy with pedestrians. Second Road and Third Road carry the diverted traffic and slow down sharply from late afternoon. The city sets up car parks at malls and public sites with free shuttles to the beach. For your transfer this means: if your hotel's entrance is on Beach Road, the driver may have to stop at a rear entrance or on Second Road. Put a note in the booking and keep your phone on. After the last rocket, the crowds walk back through the sois for an hour or more, so ordering a car to the beach right after the show rarely works.

The festival in brief

  • International pyrotechnic teams over Pattaya Bay
  • Programme from early evening, fireworks after dark
  • Music, food stalls and stages along the beach
  • Park-and-ride shuttles from car parks across the city

Timing your arrival

The easiest option is to land the day before or on the morning of the first show. A flight that arrives at Suvarnabhumi around midday brings you into Pattaya just as the closures start, which can mean a slow last few kilometres. If you have the choice, U-Tapao is much closer: about 40 km, normally under an hour. If you do arrive on a show evening, hotels east of Second Road can usually be reached via Sukhumvit and Third Road, and Jomtien via Thappraya Road, without touching Beach Road. Routes and drive times are on the U-Tapao to Pattaya page.

Choosing where to stay

A room on Beach Road gives you the view but also the crowds at the door. Hotels in Naklua and Wong Amat lie a little north of the action and are quieter at night, while Jomtien has its own beach and a short ride into town once the roads reopen. The pages for Naklua & Wong Amat, Central Pattaya hotels and Jomtien hotels describe the areas. Jomtien's beachfront hotels are a good alternative too.

Families and groups

The festival draws many families from Bangkok, and children enjoy the early part of the evening. With a pram and bags, ask the hotel about the closest door away from Beach Road before you arrive. Small children are more comfortable with ear protection, as the displays are loud and close. Groups travelling together can share a minivan or a minibus with up to 19 seats; enter all passengers and luggage so the driver knows what to expect.

Leaving the morning after

On the morning after the last show, many visitors head back to Bangkok at the same time, and Motorway 7 gets busy. Leave a generous buffer for an afternoon flight. The high-season planning guide has more on busy travel days, and other events through the year are on the festival and concert overview.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Pattaya International Fireworks Festival take place?+

Usually at the end of November over two evenings. Check the city's announcement for the exact dates of the current year.

Can the driver drop me on Beach Road during the festival?+

Not while the road is closed. The driver will use a side entrance or a point on Second Road; note your hotel's alternative entrance if you know it.

Which airport is best for the festival weekend?+

U-Tapao is the closest at about 40 km. From Suvarnabhumi, plan to arrive in Pattaya before the evening closures begin.

Is there parking near the beach?+

The city usually opens car parks at malls and public sites with shuttles to the beach. With a transfer, you don't need to park.

How early should I leave for the airport the day after?+

Allow extra time, as many visitors leave at once. For Suvarnabhumi, leaving four to four and a half hours before an international flight is sensible.
