The Pattaya Countdown brings stages, Thai pop acts and midnight fireworks to Pattaya Beach over the last nights of December. Late December is also the busiest time at Bangkok's airports, so book early and plan your arrival before the New Year's Eve closures.

The Pattaya Countdown on the beach

Pattaya City usually stages its countdown over several evenings before New Year's Eve, with the main concert and the fireworks on the night of 31 December. The stage stands on the central part of Pattaya Beach; depending on the year it has been near Central Pattaya or towards Bali Hai at the southern end. Koh Larn often holds its own smaller party at the island pier. Most visitors walk from their hotel, so the transfer matters mainly for getting into town in good time. Restaurants with a sea view along Beach Road and on the hills of Pratumnak are often fully booked for the night, so reserve a table along with your room.

Closures on 31 December

From the afternoon of New Year's Eve until about an hour after midnight, a section of Beach Road around the stage is closed, and traffic is sent onto Second and Third Road. Beyond that section, the whole centre fills up from early evening. Plan to reach your hotel by early afternoon on the 31st. If you land later, the driver may set you down at a side entrance; mention it in the booking remarks. Hotel areas are compared on the pages for Central Pattaya hotels and South Pattaya & Walking Street.

New Year at a glance

  • Several concert nights on Pattaya Beach up to 31 December
  • Midnight fireworks over Pattaya Bay
  • A separate celebration on Koh Larn
  • Bangkok's big countdowns on the river and at Ratchaprasong

Arriving in peak season

The week between Christmas and New Year is the busiest time of the year at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. Immigration queues are longer, and vehicles for popular times sell out. Up to 90 minutes of waiting after landing are included, and the driver tracks your flight. With a family or a group, choose the vehicle by luggage rather than by seats; the family and group transfer page explains the sizes.

New Year's Eve in Bangkok

The Bangkok New Year's Eve celebrations centre on two places. At ICONSIAM on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya, fireworks are launched along the river, and hotels on both banks fill up early. At CentralWorld on Ratchaprasong, a large open-air countdown takes over the square in front of the mall, and the surrounding roads close in the evening. If you stay on the river, see Suvarnabhumi to Bangkok Riverside; for Ratchaprasong, Suvarnabhumi to Siam & Ratchaprasong.

Combining Bangkok and the beach

Some travellers spend the countdown in Bangkok and move to the coast afterwards, or the other way round. On 1 January the roads are usually quiet in the morning; heavier traffic towards Bangkok builds over the following days when holidaymakers return. A transfer from the city to Pattaya on New Year's Day is usually a smooth start to the beach part of the trip. Enter your Bangkok hotel as pickup point and choose a late pickup after a long night; the drive usually takes around two hours.

Going home after the holidays

Early January is busy at the airports again. For an international flight from Suvarnabhumi, leave Pattaya four to four and a half hours before departure, especially on the first weekend of the year. Book the ride on the Pattaya to Suvarnabhumi page.
