Sukhumvit is the Bangkok district closest to Suvarnabhumi: On Nut and Thong Lo are barely half an hour away outside rush hour, Nana and Asok a little more. Your driver knows which soi your hotel faces and which side of the road the entrance is on.
Sukhumvit Road runs east from Ploenchit for many kilometres, and its side streets are numbered: odd sois on the north side, even sois on the south. A hotel at Soi 2 and one at Soi 57 share the road name but are several BTS stops apart. That is why the booking form asks for the exact hotel or soi rather than just Sukhumvit. Heading for the convention centre on Rama IV instead? See the QSNCC transfer.
The western end around BTS Nana and Asok is the busiest stretch, with nightlife in the low-numbered sois, the Arab quarter around Soi 3 and the Asok junction where the BTS meets the MRT. Hotels here:
Asok Montri Road (Soi 21) is one of the most congested roads in the city at peak times, so drivers often approach these hotels from the expressway exit that avoids the junction.
Phrom Phong is calmer and more residential, with a large Japanese community, the Emporium and EmQuartier malls and Benjasiri Park right by the BTS station.
Soi 22 is also a good base for events at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, a few minutes away towards Rama IV.
Further east, Thong Lo (Soi 55) and Ekkamai (Soi 63) are known for restaurants, cafés and bars rather than shopping malls. Bangkok's Eastern Bus Terminal sits at BTS Ekkamai. Beyond the canal, On Nut has newer hotels and condominiums at more modest rates.
After meeting your driver in the arrivals hall at BKK, the car takes Motorway 7 towards the city. For On Nut, Ekkamai and Thong Lo the driver may leave early and come in from the eastern end of Sukhumvit; for Asok and Nana the expressway exits further in are usually faster. Many sois are one-way, and U-turns on Sukhumvit Road can be a long way apart, so a hotel on the far side of the road may need a short loop. Weekday evenings eastbound and Friday nights around Nana and Asok are the slowest times.
Enter your hotel name, flight number and arrival time, and you will see the fixed price for the whole vehicle before booking. Up to 90 minutes of waiting after landing are included, which covers long immigration queues. For the trip to the coast later on, the guide to the transfer from Watthana to Pattaya covers departures from Nana, Asok and Thong Lo, and the Bangkok overview lists the other city districts.
Between about 22 km for On Nut and 32 km for Nana. Outside rush hour the drive takes 30 to 45 minutes; at peak times allow up to 1 hour 10 minutes.
Yes. Odd-numbered sois are on the north side of Sukhumvit Road, even ones on the south, and U-turns are limited. Giving the exact hotel lets the driver plan the right approach.
Large hotels usually have driveways a minibus can use. In narrow sois the minibus may stop at the soi entrance or on the main road.
Yes, especially around Asok and Phrom Phong. The convention centre is a short drive or one MRT stop from Sukhumvit station.
Weekday mornings inbound, late afternoons eastbound and Friday evenings around Nana and Asok. Late-night arrivals usually move fastest.
