The Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair takes place twice a year at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, in February and in September. Book a private ride from the airport to the halls or to your hotel, with your cases in the car with you.

Two fairs a year at QSNCC

Thailand is one of the world's centres for cutting and trading coloured gemstones, and this fair is where the trade meets. The February and September editions each run for five days and fill several halls of the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center with rubies, sapphires and spinels, diamonds, pearls, silver and gold jewellery, packaging and the machines and tools of the trade. Opening hours are usually from 10 am into the early evening, with a shorter final day.

Who visits

Most visitors are professional buyers: wholesalers, retailers, designers and manufacturers, many of whom register in advance for the trade days. Thai and international exhibitors range from large manufacturing groups to small family workshops. Public visitors are usually welcome on the final days as well, so check the admission rules for your edition before you plan your visit.

The fair in brief

  • More than 70 editions held so far
  • Organised by Thailand's Department of International Trade Promotion
  • Coloured stones, diamonds, pearls, finished jewellery and equipment
  • Buyers from Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the US

Arriving with valuables

Exhibitors and buyers often travel with stones, samples or cash for purchases. A private transfer means you go from the arrivals hall to the hotel or straight to QSNCC without changing vehicles or putting your bags in a shared taxi queue. Keep valuables in your hand luggage and in the cabin, not in the boot, and tell the driver if you need to stop at a specific hall entrance; Halls 1 to 4 are on the ground level and Halls 5 to 7 one level below. Allow 35 to 60 minutes from Suvarnabhumi, slightly less from Don Mueang.

February or September?

The two editions feel different. February falls in the dry, comparatively cool high season, when hotels around Asok and along Sukhumvit are busy with holidaymakers as well, so book early. The September fair comes at the end of the rainy season: hotel rooms are easier to find, but heavy afternoon showers can slow the traffic on Ratchadaphisek Road and Rama IV around closing time. If you fly out on the last fair day, allow an extra half hour for the drive to the airport.

Bangkok's gem district in Bang Rak

Many dealers combine the fair with appointments in Bangkok's traditional jewellery quarter around Silom and Mahesak Road in Bang Rak, where trading offices, cutters and setting workshops sit close together. If you want to stay near these offices, see our page on transfers to Silom and Sathorn; from there QSNCC is a short drive along Rama IV.

Chanthaburi: the gem market in the east

Serious buyers of coloured stones often add a trip to Chanthaburi, the gem town near the Cambodian border, where traders meet at the weekend gem market. It is around 250 km from Bangkok, so a dedicated day or an overnight stay makes sense. If you land in Don Mueang and go straight there, the Don Mueang to Chanthaburi transfer covers the route.

Ending the trip in Pattaya

From QSNCC, Pattaya is around 145 km and usually 2 to 2.5 hours away, a practical stop on the way to Chanthaburi or simply for a few days off after the fair. For a direct ride from the plane, use the Bangkok airport to Pattaya transfer.
